Lab Values &
Code of Conduct
Science is professional curiosity...
The point of every study is to learn something we didn't know before. One of the most important things we do as a lab and as scientists is ask questions. Ask early and often, about anything and everything. Think about what you know and what you don't know. Don't make assumptions!
Curiosity
Push each other to do better
I want to see us all do the best we can in all our lab endeavors. That often means recognizing other peoples' strengths and collaborating to improve a project, and (constructively) pushing each other to make improvements where necessary.
Collaborative Competitiveness
You are surrounded by colleagues
We want to see everyone succeed in ways that are individually important. All of us have different strengths, knowledge and experience. Help each other out when you have capacity, give your critical and constructive feedback, celebrate every success so we can thrive together.
Support
Let your data speak for itself
All results contribute to the process of science. We all make mistakes sometimes, and that's fine- these are also opportunities to learn! Nothing is so important to falsify or misrepresent data.
Honesty & Integrity
Science is professional learning
Results not significant? Results opposite of predictions? Stumble upon some results? All are pathways to learning new things about the natural world and are valuable steps to understanding. Don't get too attached to hypotheses, think of lots of alternatives, then all results are useful. Ask for support where you need it- for efficient growth
Growth Mindset
-
All communication, be it online or in person, should be appropriate for a professional audience, and be considerate of people from different cultural backgrounds. Sexual language and imagery are not appropriate at any time.
-
Be kind to others and do not insult or put down other group members.
-
Behave professionally. Remember that harassment and sexist, racist, or exclusionary jokes are not appropriate.
-
Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of discussions, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.
-
Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.
-
Contribute to discussions in meetings with a constructive, positive approach.
-
Be mindful of talking over others when discussing in groups and be willing to hear out the ideas of others.

Contribute with good intentions; assume good intentions
We value participation from all lab members; diverse perspectives and backgrounds help us all to think and approach problems differently, and find alternative solutions. To create an environment where we feel comfortable sharing our perspectives, we expect all members to be respectful and courteous to others.
Courtesy, Inclusivity, and Respect
